Listen to the Songs for Freddy’s Album

June 11, 2008

Something About That Girl

Remember that girl you never should have liked? In fact, looking back, there doesn’t seem to be one redeeming quality about her? Okay…well maybe one. This song’s about her.

Defying Gravity
People try to bring me down, and that’s okay. This song’s all about rising against adversity. When $h*t gets thrown at you, accept it. Embrace it. Defy it. There’s always a way to achieve, and as long as you don’t sweat the petty stuff, and just pet the sweaty stuff, anything is possible.

Big Shot Baby

I am so ridiculously blessed to have Kidd Kraddick and ALL OF YOU rooting for me. I often fantasize about the moment when every single label comes back and begs me to sign another conventional “sign-your-life-away” deal. This song is born from that hypothetical moment. Imagine all their faces…

Find You

While it’s called “Find You,” this song is actually more about a guy/girl waiting around for love to find him/her. It’s triumphant because there’s zero doubt that love isn’t an option; it’s a song about patience, and the excitement and frustration of waiting for love.

Closer To Heaven

This song is about addiction. I’ve tried to reveal things about myself in the lyrics while also keeping it universal enough to just be a love song…which it also is. If Heaven is perfection, and someone brings you close…sing this to them.

Perfect Wall

Sometimes I just need to be alone. Don’t you?

She Comes Alive

I. Love. Sleep.

Barrow Street

Barrow Street is a place where some bad stuff happened to me – stuff that was unexpected and tough to deal with. It’s the place of lost love and forgotten friendship, the street that now makes every other one a bit more inviting. Writing this song was catharsis for me, and by the end of the song I find myself painfully rejoicing, not lamenting.

Just Like I Told You

Last week someone asked me where I get my motivation from. She said, it must be easy when so many people are encouraging you. It’s interesting. Encouragement is incredible. It makes you want to keep going when you know you’re connecting with people. But to me, it’s not the people who told me I could do it that put the fire in me; it’s the people who told I couldn’t. This song’s to all of them, ‘cos I always told them I’d be back. Squashing dreams, no matter how young or old the dreamer is, is the most evil thing anyone can do. Reality is a bad excuse for giving up. Imagine the world if people hadn’t dreamed. Scary. (This song was inspired by an email about a student in college whose father wanted him to pursue a conventional career path; the kid was okay with that but just wanted a bit of time to pursue something of passion. Sadly, his dad said he couldn’t. The kid’s plan was noble though and awesome and when he asked for advice, I told him that if he actually achieves what he’s set on doing, his dad will be the proudest man alive. Shooting down someone else’s excitement way too easy and way too cruel.)

Got What I Need
This song is about longing and lust. The guy in it literally can’t go on without the girl he’s singing to. She’s the song he can’t get out of his head.

Lets Go

This is about a guy and a girl who want each other (or so the guy thinks) but the girl won’t admit it. They’ve been playing games for weeks and it’s killing him. She teases him day in and day out, and he needs a freakin kiss.

Freaks

This song was directly inspired by a MySpace message from a girl who performed in a talent show at school a couple months ago. The judges (who happened to be her friends) totally made fun of her and told her she was terrible. I said, unless the judges were The Beatles, screw them. Unfortunately, it’s not that easy. In fact, she’s decided to put music on an indefinite hold based on the perfection of American magazines and TV shows like American Idol. The message was signed: “Just another 13-year-old loser/freak from Dallas.” I wish she knew that pretty soon……she’ll rule the world. ‘Cos that’s what freaks do.

Wait

Another song inspired by an email from a girl who’s “not stalking” her boyfriend but just can’t get over him. “Everything just feels the same,” she said, “And if nothing else, I’m just gonna wait for him, right here on his corner.”

Jump

This is from a very recent email about a guy who slept through life. Literally. He missed work til he was fired and missed so many dates with his girlfriend that she left him. I tried to make it a bit more universal (i.e., sleep = denial) which is something I can unfortunately relate to. Check it out.

Wanna Be Everything

I love JC. He is better than both you and me combined in every possible way!!! But seriously, he’s so cool…and he wants to be everything…and so do I 

Wake up

This is about a spoiled brat whose family lost all their money. It’s not teasing her (because financial trouble and/or emotional trouble) is a terrible thing. I just tried painting a picture of how superficial her “green” life was. This song is an alarm clock, reminding her that life is full of so much more and that she should wake up to that before it’s too. This was inspired by an incident from my high school.

The Way

This song is about the perfect woman.

Dance Dancing is the only drug you need. ‘Nuff said.

Carry You

This is about an alcoholic exgirlfriend who I was tired of carrying home every night. Not my current girlfriend who almost never drinks!!! Love you Laura, don’t be mad at me!!!
